The 2020 Ford Explorer is available with a variety of engines. The base Explorer, XLT, and Limited trims are powered by a turbocharged, 300 horsepower 2.3-liter I-4 engine that produces 310 pound-feet of torque. The lineup’s most powerful engine is the ST’s 400 horsepower 3.0-liter V-6 that produces an impressive 415 pound-feet torque and a top speed of 143 mph. All engines are paired with a 10-speed transmission for enhanced acceleration and smoother shifting. Rear-wheel drive is standard, with available four-wheel drive.
Ford’s Terrain Management System allows you to quickly choose between drive modes for traction when you need it most. Drive modes include normal, trail, deep snow/sand, slippery, sport, tow/haul, and eco mode and can be switched quickly with the easy-to-use console dial. Properly equipped, the 2020 Explorer can tow a maximum of 5,600 pounds.
Interior Comforts
Luxury interior finishes include leather upholstery, a carbon-fiber-lined front dash, paddle shifters, and privacy glass. Active Motion front seats include massage themes and lumbar support to provide the ultimate in comfort. Tri-zone climate control allows passengers to adjust the temperature to their individual needs. The E-Z entry second-row seats provide quick access to the third row with the push of a button. Available PowerFold seats in the third row make it easy to add extra cargo room when you need it most. The 2020 Explorer provides a maximum cargo space of 87 cubic feet behind the first row.
Infotainment features in the 2020 Explorer include USB ports, 12-volt powerpoints, and available wireless charging. All-New Hybrid
The Explorer Limited Hybrid is all-new for 2020. The hybrid is equipped with a 318 horsepower 3.3-liter hybrid V-6 engine. When equipped with four-wheel drive, the hybrid engine has an EPA-estimated range of more than 450 miles per tank. This range increases to over 500 miles when equipped with rear-wheel drive. The hybrid Explorer also provides an impressive fuel efficiency of 27 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. The maximum towing capacity of the Limited hybrid is a notable 5,000 pounds.
Safety Features
Every Explorer includes a safety canopy air bag system, LATCH anchors/tethers, and rear child safety locks. The standard SOS Post Crash Alert System automatically activates the horn and lights to draw emergency attention after an accident. Ford’s Co-Pilot360 safety suite is also standard and includes blind-spot monitoring, a rearview camera, lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking, and automatic high beams. Additional available safety features include active park assist and a forward sensing system.
