The beautiful countryside of North Georgia has the soil and acreage needed to produce breathtaking vineyards and equally incredible wines. Some famous Merlots, Chardonnays, and Sauvignons are grown in the state, and you can visit for a tasting and purchase a bottle or two while looking out over the verdant hills, mountains, and farmlands of Georgia. Here are five of the most beautiful wineries in the Peach State.
Yonah Mountain Vineyards
At the foot of Yonah Mountain, you will find this landmark vineyard spanning over 200 acres. Tastings are available, but for something truly unique, you can schedule a 45-minute tour through the property’s wine caves. Other events include the Signature Vineyard Tour and Vintner tasting (sampling nine varieties of wine along the way), live music every Saturday, and Masterpiece Mixers every second Saturday of the month (where you can practice painting while sipping some Georgia-made vino).
Wolf Mountain Vineyards
Wolf Mountain Vineyards is another excellent option overlooking the Georgia mountains. This winery is on top of Wolf Mountain near the Southern Appalachian Mountains.
Wolf Mountains Vineyards boasts the honor of being Georgia’s first winery to win Best-In-Class and double Gold Medals at the San Francisco Chronicle and Los Angeles International Wine competitions. It has since gone on to win over 200 awards at other national wine tasting competitions. The award-winning bottles on offer include dry white wines, dry rosé and red wines, semi-sweet and port wines, and sparkling wines.
Frogtown Winery
Also nestled near the Appalachian Mountains, this 57-acre vineyard produces dry reds and whites, off dry premium wines, sweet Vinifera wines, and Muscadine wines. Visit the bottle shop before heading home, and consider joining the Citizens Wine Club to enjoy discounts on pre-released wines, special cuvees, and “Members-Only” released wines — many of which are available only in Frogtown.
Guests can visit the tasting room any day of the week. The on-site Panini bar is open over the weekend, Friday through Sunday.
Three Sisters Vineyards
Three Sisters Vineyards hosts the Georgia Wine Country Festival, making it a great place to visit if you’re in town during June. This is a 108-acre property, and its rolling hills and gorgeous views of the lush Georgia landscape make it a popular destination for weddings. The tasting room is open Thursday through Sunday, and events such as live music and harvest celebrations are held throughout the year. Reds, whites, and sparkling wines are available for purchase.
Tiger Mountain Vineyards
Six varieties of French wine and one American Norton grape wine are produced at the Tiger Mountain Vineyards. This winery has received over 225 national and regional awards since 2001 — a testament to the property’s global standing as a manufacturer of quality wines. You can visit the Dahlonega Tasting Room to sample the wine, and the on-site Red Barn Café is ideal for a romantic meal.
There are many other wineries throughout the state, but these are a few of the best to visit for some rich history, incredible offerings of food and drink, and gorgeous views overlooking the countryside. Schedule a stop at one of these locations the next time you’re in North Georgia.
